Santa Cruz Away and Overnight Ride

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 20-22 March 2026

Are you interested in joining us for a scenic and well proven single-day outing or series of rides in Santa Cruz?

Then sign up as soon as you can, and you will enjoy the rare opportunity to participate on new roads in the off-tourist season!

As well as great rides, we are planning a few optional happy hours and dinners for more opportunities to have fun with your teammates.

Guests are welcome!

You may select a single day for your cycling.

Just let us know what your intentions are, particularly once you have read the more detailed plan.

This plan has been emailed to all active members, which describes all proposed routes, complete with download links.

In the meantime, please make your reservations among the eight (8) rooms we have blocked.

Please email at awayorg@teamalameda.org if you have booked a room and how many will be in your party so that we can coordinate. Also, please indicate your name, contact details, intended overnight date(s) and any special requests. If you are able to carry some additional bags for those cycling from Alameda, please indicate that as well.

Please join us for the club's annual picnic at Lincoln Park as we celebrate 20 years with Team Alameda!

Guests of club members are welcome!

Harrison Recreation Center in Lincoln Park (Entrance is off of Fernside in Alameda)

12:00pm to 4:00pm

This year, we are going to have an excellent Indian Street Food vendor, Pochy's, provide us with awesome food. Food and beverages will be provided by the club, but feel free to bring a salad or dessert to share with your cycling friends if you wish.

And, as always, we will have a raffle for all Team Alameda members who attend the picnic!

We will also have a gear exchange table so please bring any of that bike gear you have lying around the house not being used. Any gear left at the end of the picnic will be donated to Waterside Workshops (www.watersideworkshops.org)

Participate in Team Alameda’s 8^th annual

Ride of Silence

Ride of Silence is an international solidarity ride honoring the memories of those affected by tragic cycling accidents. Your presence on this ride will help raise awareness and promote safer streets for everyone. This solemn event is not only a tribute but also a call to action for improved safety measures for cyclists in our community.

On Wednesday, May 21 at 7pm, we will be riding through the main streets of Alameda in Silence at a pace of less than 12 mph for approximately 8 miles. We will start and finish at 2417 Central Ave (at the Kaiser steps). There will be a short presentation before we ride.

On the Team Alameda calendar for May 21^st there is an attachment you can download and print. Attach it to your bike or your back to let the community know the purpose of this ride.

Recommended are front and rear bike lights and reflective clothing.

We regret, that the Summer Solstice Away Ride in Santa Cruz will not take place this year. For understandable reasons, we did not generate sufficient interest in this event. If you have reserved a room at the Mission Inn & Suites, we urge you to cancel your reservation. No penalty fee will apply. Next year, we intend to schedule this ride in May or earlier, so all participants may also benefit from the off-season rates.

The ride will be held the evening of May 15^th at 7:00pm. we will meet up in front of the Kaiser building on Central and then ride a quiet and slow 11 miles or so through the streets of Alameda. Information can be found on our calendar at www.teamalameda.org .

Sean Eastwood is participating in Chefs Cycle 2024 in May up in Santa Rosa to raise money for the charity No Kid Hungry. He will be cycling 100 miles per day for three consecutive days, raising money for this powerful mission to help ensure children have reliable access to food, with the goal of ending childhood hunger in America. Hey Team Alameda! We have two new sponsors supporting our group!

First up is Alameda Art Lab.

Alameda Art Lab offers classes in mosaics, stained glass, fused glass art and jewelry, wire art, painting and drawing for adults and youths. Located in Alameda, Alameda Art Lab also offers after-school classes, summer camps, parties (think birthday, bridal, girls' night out, you think of it, and they will help host it!) and team building events.

Alameda Art Lab is owned and operated by JaYing Wang, a mosaic and glass artist, art teacher and business owner in Alameda since 2005.

JaYing Wang has taught art classes to hundreds of adults and children. She has been a mosaic and glass artist since 1995 and an art teacher since 2002. In the mid-2000's, JaYing owned Children's Art Studio in Alameda, CA, where she taught art to pre-school children and elementary school kids. She has also taught after-school art classes for Alameda Education Foundation, teaching at most of the elementary schools in town. In addition to teaching classes, JaYing also loves to work on large commissions. She has created many public mosaic murals in collaboration with schools (locally, she has installed murals at St. Phillip Neri, Otis Elementary, Bay Farm Elementary and Amelia Earhart school), as well as commissions for churches, restaurants, and even the South Shore shopping center.

We are very proud to join the list of other local community organizations that Buestad supports, such as Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley, the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society, the Alameda Council Boy Scouts of America, and the Alameda Point Collaborative among others.

The 2023 Team Alameda “away weekend” of riding is only a week and a half away! Just like last year, we are going to hit the roads around the Russian River and will have our “base” be downtown Occidental.

The dates are October 20th (Friday) to 22nd (Sunday).

The Occidental Lodge, which is in downtown Occidental and close to several restaurants, set aside a block of 10 rooms for us. Please check out the lodge at https://www.occidentallodge.com/. Call the lodge to make reservations and tell them that you’re with “Team Alameda”. Their phone number is (707) 874 3623.

If you would rather stay somewhere else in the area, or you didn’t jump on the reservations in time and the Lodge is all booked up, here are other options in the area:

Inn at the Tides in Bodega Bay
Lots of other hotels and AirBNBs in Guerneville

We will have options for riding, both distance and pace, and will do our best to make sure that everyone has places for refueling along the way. We are organizing a SAG car for us. Shimano Cranksets Recall •Ultegra FC-6800 •Dura-Ace FC-9000 •Ultegra FC-R8000 •Dura-Ace FC-R9100 •Dura-Ace FC-R9100P

I saw Shimano recalled 680,000 cranks today. The recall lists any cranks manufactured prior to July 2019, including the FC-R8000. I have an FC-R8000 from 2021, manufacturing code “TA” (so after July 2019, since these codes progress alphabetically).

This recall involves Shimano Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100 and FC-R9100P, 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech Road Cranksets, manufactured prior to July 2019 sold individually and on bicycles sold by other manufacturers such as Trek and Specialized. The recalled models have printed ‘Ultegra’ or Dura Ace’ logos on the arm. The affected models are pre-July 2019 production and have the following two letter production code on backside of the crank arm where the pedals are attached: KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE, and RF.

United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recall statement

The USCPSC site list says consumers with an affected crankset “should

immediately stop using the cranksets manufactured before July 1, 2019,

and contact an authorized Shimano dealer to schedule a free crankset

inspection.

“Only consumers whose cranksets show signs of bonding separation or delamination during the inspection will be provided a free replacement crankset and installation.”

CALL FOR CANDIDATES

Every September the Team Alameda Board issues a “Call for Candidates”. This is that “Call”.

We are looking for volunteers to help run the organizational side of our club for the next 2 years (from January 2023-December 2025). If you have ever given thought to giving back to Team Alameda, or to helping TA improve our club, this is a great way to do that — and a perfect time to get involved at a new level.

Board members are elected for a 2-year period. Approximately 1/2 of our board members’ 2-year term ends each year. Some will run again, others will not. This year we have 2 board members who are stepping down, leaving a total of 3 open seats available (we had 1 vacancy from earlier this summer). It would be great to have 3 or more volunteers step up to fill those vacancies! If you are interested, or if you have questions, please contact any of our current board members (their email addresses are listed on the About Us->Board of Directors page on our website).

The nominating period opens on September 1st and will

close on September 30th.

The slate of new candidates shall be presented to the Board at its regular October meeting. If the number of candidates is equal to or less than the number of open seats at the time the nominating period closes (September 30th), all candidates shall be deemed elected, and the result will be published to the membership.

Should there be more candidates than there are open board seats, the following election process will be followed:

1. Voting shall be conducted electronically, with voting instructions e-mailed to all members and posted in an appropriate “members only” section of the website not later than October 15th.

2. Voting shall take place during the period October 21 - 27 and the results shall be published to the membership not later than October 31st each year.

The specific positions and functions for each Director is decided by the Board each January at its regular business meeting, at which time the Board also shall elect its officers for the year (see Article V).

The board meets for approximately 1.5 hours monthly. We are a great group of dedicated riders who love the Club and what it has brought to our lives. Please consider joining us and helping us promote the club and continue offering great group rides for the Alameda community.

Away Weekend in Occidental/Russian River - October 14-16

We are very excited to announce that the Team Alameda “away weekend” of riding is officially happening for 2022! We are going to hit the roads around the Russian River, and will have our “base” be downtown Occidental.

The dates are October 14th (Friday) to 16th (Sunday).

The Occidental Lodge, which is in downtown Occidental and close to several restaurants, has set aside a block of rooms for us - see https://www.occidentallodge.com/. To get one of the reserved rooms, please call them and tell them that you're with Team Alameda. There is no special discount for Team Alameda, but they set rooms aside for us. Their phone number is (707) 874 3623.

If you would rather stay somewhere else in the area, or you didn’t jump on the reservations in time and the Lodge is all booked up, here are other options in the area:

Inn at Occidental (really close by)
Inn at the Tides in Bodega Bay
Lots of other hotels and AirBNBs in Guerneville

We will have multiple options for riding, both distance and pace, and will do our best to make sure that everyone has options for refueling along the way. We are organizing a SAG (support) car. There was some interest this year in Team Alameda having a presence at the Alameda 4th of July parade; however, we just didn't have the time to rally the troops and make it happen. That said, the Alameda Recreation & Park Department is looking for volunteers to help out if you have some time.

They are "...interested in some people volunteering at the staging area along Lincoln Ave. If still interested, I am looking for volunteers for staging area to assist parade entries as well as monitor access along Oak street for the VIP’s or help along Park Street for crowd control. If volunteering, you would need to be at City Hall parking lot at 7:45 am for a debrief and chosen assignment. "

Be aware - extra traffic expected on Bear Creek Road

Hi TA! We have received a notification about some upcoming work on Bear Creek Road (the road that makes up the Three Bears ride) in Lafayette, and thought it best to share with everyone as this is a very popular route for many of us.

East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD) plans to remove soil from EBMUD’s storage site at the Briones Reservoir located off Bear Creek Road. Trucks will be utilizing Bear Creek Road and Camino Pablo to and from Highway 24 for hauling activities.

The project is planned to begin the week of April 18, 2022, and should last approximately 4.5 months, until late August. Work hours will be Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. during the school year, and 9:00 a.m-4:00 p.m. during the summer break.

EBMUD says that their project contractor and drivers will be expected to exercise extreme caution while hauling and in the presence of bicyclists and pedestrians. Signs will be posted to alert drivers to bicyclists and alert bicyclists to trucks. Truck drivers will be monitored for compliance with the project’s rules for speed and safety throughout the project.

However, they are also asking that bicyclists be aware and cautious of trucks during hauling. Bicyclists may choose to plan their trip to avoid that area during the haul times, such as in the early morning, evenings, or on weekends.

The nominating period (read volunteer period) is open and will close on October 30th.

We have again reserved the Harrison Center in Lincoln Park on Sunday, September 19^th, for a Team Alameda Picnic and get-together!

We will have catered lunch and drinks, some nice give-aways, and a raffle with excellent prizes from Alameda-based businesses. As always, we will also be honoring our ride leaders.

If you would like to bring a dessert or salad to share with the club, that would be wonderful and very welcome!

We will have a table set up for a “bike gear swap”. If you have any tools, kits, bikes or other bike-related items gathering dust, this will be a great way to free up some space in your home. Any items that you bring that your fellow Team Alamedans do not want will be donated to a local, bike-focused organization.

This event will be held outdoors. However, please bring your mask, as we will be asking everyone who goes into the inside area of the site (and while queueing up for food) to wear one. We will also provide disinfectant to sanitize your hands.

Also, bring your thoughts and ideas on how to better our club as we will be distributing a short survey for everyone. The information gathered will help the Board in crafting the future of the Club.

New Kit for New Members or Refurbish Your Wardrobe!

We are in the process of receiving orders for new kit until 15 July 2021. Our supplier, Voler, has agreed to a minimum order of fifteen pieces, but we know we have many more new members out there who do not even own a jersey. As member of a club, it is only proper you own at least a jersey, if not more. Show everybody your affiliation while wearing a wonderful, eye-catching design!

Many more items, including some new products, can be purchased in these team colors from our existing design. Fittings will not be possible under the circumstances, so be certain to try on kit from fellow members, if in doubt.

Some of our first-responders are already receiving their COVID-19 vaccine. The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) has issued a revised Waiver, which includes additional wording about the incidence of communicable disease.

This now needs to be signed by all Team Alameda members.

We have made it easy for you, by enabling a tick box for an electronic signature. In addition, it has come to our attention that many of our members are missing in case of emergency (ICE) phone numbers. This should not be your own number but a number of a trusted family member or friend that we can contact in case an emergency arises.

To update both of these items:

1. Sign in to Team Alameda

2. Click your name at the top right of the web page

3. Choose view profile

4. Scroll down and choose edit profile in the pink box

5. Scroll further down to Membership Information and check the 2020 Insurance Waiver box

6. Just below that is Additional Information, where you can enter your ICE contact

Introducing our New Vice President and COVID-19 Expert

Emil Palacios is a childhood friend of Mike Castro and a TA member since 31 October 2018. The referral from Mike came at an auspicious time, since Emil is a molecular and cellular immunologist with a PhD in Biomedical Science. As such, he is undoubtedly the smartest person on the Board and was therefore immediately promoted to the position of Vice President.

As our resident infectious disease immunologist, he will have an added portfolio as an advisor to our COVID-19 response and eventual opening of our club to conduct group rides again. That day is still off in the future, but until then Emil will be critical in providing us his insights about the latest research developments and anticipated rollout of the pending vaccination(s), with the added benefit of what health precautions should be taken in our sport and club activities thereafter.

COVID UPDATE FROM BIKE EAST BAY

This is response that our Club President, Ralph Bruni received from Bike East Bay regarding the status of group bike rides in our area.

Fingers crossed we may all be able to ride together some day soon?

Thanks for reaching out! As you know, recent Alameda County public health orders open social activities only to groups of 12 or less, who don't socialize with individuals from any other groups for a minimum of three weeks. We don't feel that we can reasonably maintain that enclosed circle if we were to lead rides, and that it would be challenging for individual riders to comply. Because of this, we've been advising cycling clubs to hold off on group rides as well.

We continue to follow up with local public health officials as clarification is needed. As of today, there aren't any additional resources regarding safely holding group rides. The Corona virus has impacted all of us including our cycling plans.

I wanted to provide an update on some of the more popular organized cycling events that team members have attended in the past; read it and weep:

COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Team Alameda Member:

We have received advance word of a pending official announcement mandating new restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. These prohibitions, on their own, would make our group rides impractical. We understand one such edict stipulates a six (6)-foot social distance etiquette.

With a declared national emergency and understandable concerns already having been raised, the Board was discussing pulling the trigger on our posted rides, when the following article reached us (see embedded link below):

Solo rides would still be permitted, as long as the cyclist respects the 6-foot rule. Team Alameda rides, on the other hand, are suspended on an indefinite basis, commencing with the ride posted for tomorrow, 17 March 2020. This also holds true for all events and volunteer activity on behalf of Alameda Bicycle that our club would be involved with.

We will keep close track of any further restrictions and overall developments, but are anticipating the health crisis to last a fair time before it is resolved to the satisfaction of the politicians and health authorities. Please be patient, as we are all regrettably constrained in what we can do to ameliorate this deplorable situation.

Richmond Bridge Bike Path Closure

Ride for a Reason: Support Local Public Schools, Saturday, April 25

Ride for a Reason is a bike ride to Sacramento to draw attention to the fact that California public schools are underfunded, and to raise funds for enrichment programs in twelve local public schools including Encinal High in Alameda. This year our goal is to raise $180,000 to support enrichment programs at our beneficiary schools ($15,000 each). At all of the schools we support, 50 percent-or-more of students qualify for free- or reduced-price lunches. R4R is the single largest fundraiser for eight of the schools that we support.

Choose from 45-, 65-, and 106-mile routes that include five rest stops, a post-ride meal, and support vehicles. Our mostly flat 45-mile ride is especially kid and new rider-friendly. The 106-mile ride start in Oakland, the 65-mile ride starts at the Amtrak Station in Suisun City, and the 45-mile rides starts in Vacaville. All routes finish at the State Capitol in Sacramento. We provide transportation home (for you and your bike), and also to the starting lines for the 45-mile ride (in Vacaville) and the 65-mile ride (in Suisun City). Because this is a fundraiser, riders are encouraged (but not required) to raise at least $250.

We have not done anything to have a drive for bike registration since 2015. Here is the relevant information, if you wish to pre-register your bike, so that it may be identified in case of theft.

Some tips:

Take a photo of your bike in good light and a neutral background

New payment system

Our web site's payment system for new members and renewals was switched from using PayPal to AffiniPay.

This was done to reduce fees as well as have a more streamlined payment process.

Hello Everyone!

It was good seeing many of you at the Team Alameda picnic on Sunday. As many of you know, Team Alameda has been a founding member of Alameda Bike for the Parks since its inception in 2016. Together, our 3 annual rides have exposed thousands to the Alameda that is only seen and felt by bike, raising new bike advocates to help support increased bikeways and bike-friendly access.

We've also raised over $80,000 for the parks, and this year our goal is to raise $35,000 and have over 600 riders. I'm asking for each of you to help make our 4th annual Alameda Bike for the Parks the best yet. How can you help? Glad you asked:

- Become a route volunteer. You'll play an active role in making this event special with your hoots, hollars, cow bells. We need 15-20 volunteers throughout the perimeter of Alameda, Bayfarm, and Naval Base.

- Build a team and ride the event. My vision is a "Bay to Breakers" on wheels, where riders dress up themselves and their bikes in all sorts of craziness. Our Team Challenge is easy to join (6 or more makes a team), it's free (beyond the entry fee) and we give out plaques and publicity for Team Spirit (largest team) and Team Flair (most decorated). Form a team and help bring some fun to the event!

- Spread the word. Our Facebook page has updates, the webpage has general and registration info. It's only $45 for ride, DriFit jersey, hotdog lunch, and after-party (only $20 for those under 16). I also have an email template to forward to friends if you're willing to share. Please help!

Either way you help, I hope to see all of you there... Alameda Bicycle will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary at the after-party by sharing free ice-cream and beer (yes, I said beer, shoulda led the email with that, huh?)

RIDE LEADERS: Revised Sign-In Sheets

With the new email address for submitting the Ride Sheets:

a new version has been created. This form also reflects the recent change in pace classifications and includes a new tick box for whenever an Incident Report may be anticipated. To make certain the Board receives such Incident Reports on a timely basis, a new 24-hour rule comes into effect. Thankfully, we are a safe club and such injuries, crashes and collisions are rare.

These Sign-In Sheets come in three versions, as found under the "Ride Leader" tab:

As a pdf for the regular rides, the simplest way to print out a blank sheet when participants are not known in advance
In Excel, designed for our Tuesday/Thursday rides or whenever you wish to enter known names in advance, which saves time for the actual signing in
Also for our Tuesday/Thursday rides as a pdf, with known riders entered in advance

The Excel file can be edited of course, so please alert the Board whenever changes to the names or phone numbers should occur and our Webmaster will endeavor to update it and the associated pdf.

Please do not forget to check "Yes" or "No" under Incident Report when you send in your scanned sheet after the ride. This will show our club is mindful of our obligations and makes it easy to match any Incident Report to a particular ride.

It is good practice for Ride Leaders to carry a copy of the Incident Report with them, as details, such as insurance information, are much easier to obtain on scene rather than after the ride.
