3/A/71 – Alameda, Sunol, Livermore, Collier Canyon and Walnut Creek

Start time was 0800 hours.  This time, Ron Arth accompanied me as far as the end of Dublin Grade.  The weather was actually fine, temperatures did not exceed 88 degrees, and there was hardly any wind.  Even riding solo, I averaged 15.9 mph over a total elevation gain of 2,800 feet.

Actual saddle time was 4 ½ hours and I made it to the BART station in Walnut Creek by 1250 hours.  On the way to Sunol, there were plenty of cyclists on the road.  Through Collier Canyon, I did not see a single soul, though this section is beautiful and has hardly any motorists.

There is always some driver who serves to prove the point that the 3-foot passing law is well intended, but remains a theoretical construct.  This time, it was a pickup truck with a wide box trailer.  The truck made it past me with plenty of room to spare, however the trailer blasted past so close, it made my bike veer from the air pressure.  You try to count your blessed angels when this happens, but it is upsetting nevertheless as it only reflects an uncaring attitude.

Overall, the ride was mostly over rolling terrain.  With my new wheelset, it never required any undue exertion on my part and I was home by 1350 hours, well ahead of the estimated schedule.

I am hoping to find more adherents in the future, willing to explore new roads that can easily be reached by utilizing our network of BART stations.  In fact, the new Milpitas and Berryessa stations North of San Jose are scheduled to open in November of this year.
